One of the best books I read this year. The way Jesmyn Ward writes it's like you are *right there* with the characters, in the sticky heat, going hungry with them for food, love, acceptance. Even though I didn't have a lot in common with any of the characters, the way she really gets down to their soul and you feel like you know each of them deeply, it makes the story so powerful, so gut-wrenching. Maybe this book was too literary for me? That plus my pace as a reader felt uneven. I felt like I was either slogging through the poetic language, or tripping over it because I was trying to read as quickly as possible to find out what happened. I do like a book, however, where the dog is obviously (to me) the best character.
I didn't expect to like the writing style, going in knowing that it was laden with rich description, metaphors, and similes, but somehow it worked for me--not coming across as too syrupy. Excellent portrayal of the minute dramas that play out between family, set against the perfect backdrop of the impending storm.
