This is a fine novel - well-written, nicely paced, with compelling characters. However, these ratings are subjective and I demoted it to two stars because of multiple vivid descriptions of cruelty and violence to animals. It made it very unpleasant to read, although I should have known about the difficult subject matter before I started.
