Not only was I the wrong audience for the concept, the writing was not good enough to make up for that mismatch.
If you don't play role playing games now, and didn't grow up in an arcade in the 80's, you won't get the warm familiarity of the references in the book that would help you gloss over the book's other shortfalls.
I dabble in geeky things, and I know enough about the 80's to make some decent jokes and appreciate them. That was not enough for me to look past the weak spots in Player One. ...more

This book came well recommended. I can't say I enjoyed it to the max, because I lived under a rock as a child and so many of the references didn't resonate the way I think they should. I was very entertained, however, and I'd certainly recommend it to all the 80's kids out there. Apparently it's going to be made into a movie which would could be amazing.
