It was a'ight. I'm not seeing why it won the Printz award, etc.
Funny though: that WSJ article about how YA lit is "too dark" listed "Ship Breaker" as a book that they could recommend. This book is dark!!! The main character's dad is on meth and tries to kill him multiple times in a post-apocalyptic future. WTF, WSJ. One more reason that article was lame. ...more

Bacigalupi's YA science fiction debut warns the reader of the dangers of climate change. He does so in a creative, adventurous yarn about Nailer, a teenage ship breaker who tears through old ships in search of copper for his boss.

Gritty, bleak dystopian book that follows 14-year old Nailer, who works scavenging metal and wire from abandoned ships on the Gulf Coast. Conditions are brutal and so are the characters, probably accurately reflecting the kind of world where so many people live on the fringes. Great world building and interesting plot, though I never felt like I knew Nailer very well. There were some great supporting characters.
