This is the kind of book I typically devour - about a President, set in DC, historical events, crime elements. You could easy relate to James Garfield - his sad-luck upbringing, can-do spirit (working his way through college as a carpenter!), an easy way with people. All set against the patronage-doling New York Senator Roscoe Conkling (who comes off in the book as more of a villain than perhaps is accurate for a man who was a supporter of Lincoln and a drafter of the 14th amendment).
