This read like a romance novel to me, with the main twist being two predictably ill-fated lovers fighting against a world that doesn’t understand them — and with lots of undertones of a very traditionalist worldview with damsels in distress needing rescue while older, rich men make the decisions. All of that was wrapped up in the trappings of a fantasy book (vampires, witches, daemons) and lots of historical references, and a brewing magical war.
