This read like a romance novel to me, with the main twist being two predictably ill-fated lovers fighting against a world that doesn’t understand them — and with lots of undertones of a very traditionalist worldview with damsels in distress needing rescue while older, rich men make the decisions. All of that was wrapped up in the trappings of a fantasy book (vampires, witches, daemons) and lots of historical references, and a brewing magical war.

The good parts of this book were really good, but it also contained eye-rolling examples of everything I hate about vampire romance. Am I the only person left who prefers their vampires as vicious monsters who don't find their one true love? It looks like it.

Update: I didn't like it the second time either.

4.5. I had heard a lot of good things about A Discovery of Witches and with the second book having just come out, I thought it was the perfect time for me to dive into this one. Brutal quantities of borderline-abusive heterosexual kink in this otherwise inoffensive disposable urban fantasy. I know how common "strong independent woman falls for overprotective, controlling man and likes it" kinks are among straight people, but y'all need to negotiate that shit properly.

I was going to see if I could think of anything else to say about this book, but... no, not really.

Not great sequence of events:

I watched the series first then listened to the book. The narrator was very good, giving each character a distinct voice.

Interesting. Front half was draggy and I had some issues with the relationship dynamics, but it really picked up towards the end.
