I'm glad I read this without watching the movie first, and with little to no familiarity with Virginia Woolf's work, because there were no spoilers for me. While it's definitely not a happy read (it's one of those books that gives me that claustrophobic, crushed by the mundanity of life, feeling), I enjoyed the writing. Although I saw the movie first, I still really enjoyed the book. The writing is beautiful and evocative and the characters are well formed. It made me want to run out and read Mrs. Dalloway.
