Felt a little lost with this one.
Seemed utterly romanticized (not necessarily in a bad way) and yet the writing felt very unaffected.
I was a little put off by Smith's memory of clothes - I think this is supposed to be endearing and also important to note the styles of the times, or at least, her relationship to style, but for every event she knew exactly what she wore, and I found it a somewhat distasteful characteristic. One of those things that makes me nostalgic for a time or place I have never been: in this case, the Hotel Chelsea and East Village in the late '60s and early '70s. Though it's Patti Smith's memoir, it's as much about Robert Mapplethorpe as it is about her, with their art (or rather, Art) as the third main character. A little too much of Smith fawning over Rimbaud and Genet for my taste, but lots of lovely details about everyone from Janis Joplin to Jimi Hendrix.
