I was totally surprised by this book. I was expecting some outdated science fiction tending towards Space Opera, and instead I got a thoughtful, philosophical reflection on humanity, sacrifice, loss and science. Plus some space opera.

This book is not about Mars. It would work equally well on any unknown frontier -- forest, ocean, indigenous population. I have a good stomach for horror and disturbing stuff, but this digs into slight cultural discomforts that hit harder than gore. I can't read more than a couple entries at a time, and this is my third time through. Doesn't get old.
