I was totally surprised by this book. I was expecting some outdated science fiction tending towards Space Opera, and instead I got a thoughtful, philosophical reflection on humanity, sacrifice, loss and science. Plus some space opera.

What more can you really want in your science fiction?

This book is not about Mars. It would work equally well on any unknown frontier -- forest, ocean, indigenous population. I have a good stomach for horror and disturbing stuff, but this digs into slight cultural discomforts that hit harder than gore. I can't read more than a couple entries at a time, and this is my third time through. Doesn't get old. ...more
