What a punch to the gut. Passionate, candid and powerful, I was sucked in from the beginning by Coates' beautiful prose.
I could see teens really enjoying this book, and learning a lot from what Coates has to say. It'd be good to pair it with a YA novel that tackles similar subjects for a robust discussion. ...more

A powerful, beautifully written, look at America as experienced by African Americans.
Appreciated every moment of this part-memoir/part exploratory essay/book for the different perspective that it brought me. I think it would take multiple reads to really absorb it all. Thoughtful, heartbreaking, opening.
Not a huge fan poetic prose. That said, voice was and is important; and the parts where he shared genuine feelings about his son, versus talking about himself, that were incredibly touching and real.

Beautifully written, passionate, and personal book full of wisdom and pain. I learned a hell of a lot. Highly recommended to anyone.
