I liked this book, but I'm really not sure why. The characters were completely flat, and annoying on top of that. The author's use of italics every other sentence drove me CRAZY. The wild chase to break the story seemed a little overdone as well.
Nevertheless, I liked some of the twists and turns of the plot, some of the parallels between a Cordova film and the life of the "investigators." It was hard to figure out what really was going on: was Cordova toying with them? was Ashley? was it all cr ...more

I really wanted to like this. The plot was pretty engrossing, but I was so distracted by the utter lack of differentiation among characters' dialogue and narrative exposition that I couldn't get into the story. Characters that really shouldn't be spinning metaphor-laden prosaic descriptions of action JUST KEEP DOING IT, GUYS! And I don't think Marisha Pessl has met a simile she didn't like. Greg was right when he said this book is "66% great by volume." It started out SO GOOD. The ending was solid, but the 200 pages leading up to the ending were meh.

Started out strong with a very cool premise, and Pessl can do some things, like invoke a spooky atmosphere, very well. But about halfway through it's like she gave up - the plot got boring, the writing got sloppy, and the whole thing just collapsed. The work as a whole doesn't fulfill the promise of the beginning, when I thought I had just met my new favorite book.

The first half was vastly superior to the second, but still one of the most engaging books I've read in a long, long time.

A little too long; the ending wasn't great. I didn't find it particularly creepy, for the most part.
