I was skeptical about this book before. I felt like the first three chapter rushed? Since I finished reading Hopeless the day before, I gave it another try and boy oh boy what an outcome... I didn't put the book down until the last chapter. Colleen's words are powerful. The kind that reminds you of life - it's ugliness and it's beauty. The one you have to learn how to live and appreciate every second.

"And what's a slam?" I ask.

“It's poetry," he says as he smiles at me. "It's what I'm all about.”

Layken Cohen has had a rough couple of months. She has lost her father from a cardiac arrest and has been relocated from her safe, constant family home in Texas to a downgraded house in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Yup. Bags packed and significant belongings shoved into a rented U-Hau

Layken Cohen has had a rough couple of months. She has lost her father from a cardiac arrest and has been relocated from her safe, constant family home in Texas to a downgraded house in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Yup. Bags packed and significant belongings shoved into a rented U-Haul, Layken and the remainder of her family move to Michigan, leaving behind her the friends and stability that she has had for so long.

Enter Will Cooper - sensitive, handsome, intelligent, and extremely interested in Layken, right up since he saw her park that U-Haul into the driveway without any guidance or assistance whatsoever. Will introduces Lake to the slam, a poetry contest that he participates in regularly. And happens to be quite good at. It doesn't take long for emotions to grow between the two, and it seems that they are well on their way to falling in love and being happy together - only not.

A realization between the two leads to months of avoidance, anger, and the occasional weak moment. Love is not meant to be convenient, and it is clear with these two. When the two can barely look at the other in the eye, let alone hold a conversation, it is poetry that holds their thin line together. Yet, in a lot of ways, it is what is tearing them apart. Just as Lake's world is beginning to piece back together, it finds a way to fall apart again. And just when it seems as though there is no hope left... Words have the power to do incredible things - even piece together two people whose strings have been so incredibly tangled already.

“So what if the heartaches you wrote last year isn't what you're feeling today. it may be exactly what the person in the front row is feeling. What you're feeling now, and the person you may reach with your words five years from now - that's why you write poetry.”

I actually don't even know how to start this. I don't know. It has been such a long time since a book pulled at my heart, left me in tears, yet unable to stop myself from smiling like this book. Colleen Hoover knew what she was doing when she wrote this. The poetry aspect was fantastic, and I loved that it was such a creative way for us readers to learn about different characters.

To be honest, there were a huge number of times that I found Lake being a bit insensitive to the people around her. There were times that it seemed like Will was all that mattered, nothing else. And I didn't like that. But she held strong when she was needed, and I loved her for that. But oh, gosh. Will was great. In all the ways that mattered. He was encouraging yet firm, strong yet vulnerable, selfish yet completely selfless. I adored him. I loved every single minor character. They all brought a lesson to share with their strong. And that's really why I loved this book so much. Not so much the romance aspect, although it was wonderful, but the lessons and teachings that it has given me about life and love and loss. And nothing can really be better than that in my eyes.

For anyone who's a bit more open-minded than the regular conservative reader, and looking for a book that will actually provide you with some insight on a new perspective and a few life lessons on the way, I would wholeheartedly recommend Slammed. It is definitely up there on my favourites list.

WHAT THE FUCK WITH THAT ABRUPT ENDING, HUH?! I MEAN ONE SECOND YOU'RE ALL NICE AND EASY AND THEN BAM! THE DOOR CLOSES IN IN MY FACE! I MEAN, WHAT ?!

I seriously can't write a review right now, my fingers are all over the damn place.

What more is tomorrow ,
Than a another day?

I think i am reading too much about death these days or it's just a coincidence that every book i pick up these days have series of death encounters :(

The best part of the book was its slams , ingredients from Avett Brothers pieces and the whole pink balloon situation. TO be honest It did made me cry .Book might have annoyed me in many matters but i loved the every slam and every poem presented here. This book can make a d ...more

This is going to my favorite stack. I hesitated about reading this book but now that I read it I've found who I want to marry....
To be serious I really loved this book it was a page turner defintely. The charaters were great, there is non that I didn't like. And will oh will what do you want me say... leave the lake and come for the safari (i'm from africa).
I think I would read it again.
I never really thought I like poetry but now I think I'm gonna start doing my own. This is inspiring reall ...more

There are no words for what I think of this book and all of Colleen's books. She is amazing.
The writing in this is her absolute best. Will and Lake are two beautiful characters. The journey they embark on is funny and bittersweet and I just didnt want it to end.
