My Thoughts:
Epic fantasy novels are some of my very favorite though I find them the most challenging to review. Not only that, but this was the last of a series of companion books. I will tell you now, I adored this book. LaFevers’ writing was spotless, flowed beautifully and evoked powerful imagery and emotion.

Epic fantasy novels are some of my very favorite though I find them the most challenging to review. Not only that, but this was the last of a series of companion books. I will tell you now, I adored this book. LaFevers’ writing was spotless, flowed beautifully and evoked powerful imagery and emotion.

Each of these books has been my very favorite as I read. Every time I feel that LaFevers couldn’t possibly create a character or relationship that would be as good as the last. But she accomplished just this. Each book built upon her world and characters creating a beautifully rendered story that swept seamlessly over the three books.

In Mortal Heart we get to know Annith who was mentioned in the previous two novels but only really developed in this one. I thought she was an incredible character that was tough, bold and strong willed. I loved her spirit and inability to settle in her life. I immediately connected with her and wanted the best. She was an easy main character to read about and root for.

LaFevers excelled at creating a complex society with political intrigue and historical relevance. I loved all the nuances she created and implemented throughout this series. Interspersed with the historical are three amazingly well developed romances, Mortal Heart was no different. The relationship between Annith and Balthazar was possibly my favorite. I felt that they pushed one another and brought out the best and sometimes the most pained aspects in one another. I loved watching them struggle to overcome their personal issues to grow to know the other.

This novel had a few twist and turns that were elegantly executed. I saw each of them prior to the reveal but this in no way dampened my reading experience and actually added to it. I loved watching everything unfold and patting myself on the back when I was correct. I think many readers will miss the twists coming since they’ll be so immersed in the writing they won’t take the time to predict the outcomes. Either way this novel will keep your interest and be difficult to put down.

Final Thoughts:
Robin LaFevers is an incredibly talented writer who is able to completely immerse the reader in her world and characters. I can’t recommend this series high enough to any historical fiction and fantasy reader. Really, anyone that enjoys complex characters and impeccable writing will enjoy these.

Hmm... I wonder about Annith's involvement with the future of Britannia. She escapes the convent, all right, but... what then?
She goes & kills the first french-like dude she finds?
Runs to Ismae (& the abbess)?
Runs to Sybella?
RUNS?!

Ah, I need more! What is Annith's involvement with all the politiking & what she'll do once she's free? She won't survive! ... Or so Sybella says, anyway.
