Once upon a time, Treasure Island and The Hobbit did it for me. Well, they still do ... but back in those early teen years, I would never have forseen that one of my top five all-time books would be the reminiscences of an aging, elite British butler. Such is Ishiguro’s mastery.

This is my second Ishiguro, and I look forward to reading more. He is a master of subtlety and of hiding more than one story within a narrative. I unfortunately took a long break about a third of the way into Remains, which I don't recommend, but I was able to pick back up quickly. Remains is a wonderful example of how a skilled author can take what would often be considered a simple character (a butler with few goals and few real social skills) in a rather mundane setting (a mini road trip) and
