I can’t seem to decide if I’ve read this before or I just recall the story because I saw the movie back when it came out. Certainly, it was impossible to read without seeing Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins in my mind the entire time, but I also think that this was the sort of book I was starting to want to read right about when it came out, so maybe.

This is my second Ishiguro, and I look forward to reading more. He is a master of subtlety and of hiding more than one story within a narrative. I unfortunately took a long break about a third of the way into Remains, which I don't recommend, but I was able to pick back up quickly. Remains is a wonderful example of how a skilled author can take what would often be considered a simple character (a butler with few goals and few real social skills) in a rather mundane setting (a mini road trip) and

I didn't expect to enjoy this book add much add I did. Stevens is frustrating but strangely likeable. It's an interesting portrait of life in service and unrealised dreams. I found it profoundly sad.
