This is so f*cked up. I loved it. The writing, the imagery, the cold, the creepy but comfy vibes, the friend dinamics, 10/10.
It's funny and ironic that the book that is credited to have started the whole dark academia vibes and aesthetic is about a friend group where most don't even conclude their studies 😂 and then all this turning into ppl on tik tok pretending they know what academia entails and pretending to be part of it.

This is not always pleasant to read - the characters are not very likable - but the book is exquisite in detail. There were several references to other classic literature such as Crime and Punishment and Sherlock Holmes. References to Cumberland Farms, the marble sidewalks of Bennington and other Vermont icons were really fun to read since I lived in New Hampshire and Vermont for 50 years. I read this based on the rating and it being on people’s “Best ever reads” list. Maybe I would have enjoyed it more as a teenager. It’s boring and long winded. There is so much detail in the mundane and then major plot points or conversations are skipped over with minor detail. Took me 2 months to read!
Definitely improved on a second reading for me. I first read The Secret History when I was 16/17 and did not understand the intricacies of the group’s dynamics well enough.
Maybe 3.5 stars. A lot of unnecessary long winded paragraphs. I found myself skimming through these sections to get to something that mattered.
