Far from the madding crowd is a must-read, at least once in a lifetime. If you manage to overcome the first 50 pages, you'll grow to love Hardy's talent for creating unforgettable characters - steady, loyal, patient farmer Oak; loony, madly in love farmer Boldwood; vain, arrogant, deceitful, falsely romantic Troy; and above all of them, Bathsheba Everdene shines as one of the unhappiest, unluckiest heroines.

Melodramatic but one of Hardy's more 'upbeat'!

Tess, Jude - Hardy has a few rather downbeat stories under his belt, with his tales of Rural England. This was a classic I'd never read, but having watched an adaptation recently (Carey Mulligan), I was really keen to read this tale of a woman with three men circling her.

A story about a beautiful woman named Bathsheba who has three admirers and picks the wrong one to fall in love with. This book is so honestly written, you could mistake it for a modern story. Most girls love a bad boy and Bathsheba was no different, unfortunately for her he did not love her enough to treat her a like proper lady and hurt her very badly. Hardy is one of my favorites of the "classic" authors. This is probably my favorite of his works that I've read - while it's just as depressing as the others, it ends on a more hopeful note than usual. ...more
