I really, really liked this book - and I had never heard of it before the last six months. It's incredibly funny at the beginning, especially the description of Hartwright's first look at Miss Halcombe and the suspense is well done. It took me ages to read, but that has nothing to do with how much I liked it and was rather the result of a lot of time spent running rather than reading. I think I'm going to make my father read it next.
