I liked the drama, the characters and the story. In fact, the characters were well written and blended throughout the book. Seems like a lot of research has gone into the book.
It was very long. There is a lot of ramblings in the book; entire chapters could have been left out including Epilogue two. Once you get through Volume 1 and 2 it does get a lot better and easier to read.

I see Rostovs and Bezukhovs and Napoleon everywhere. War and peace really is a whole universe: difficult to penetrate, difficult to leave. Natasha remains one of the most interesting, best depicted characters in the story of literature - pity she loses her momentum and sheer vitality towards the end.

War and Peace is truly an epic journey, one that not only limits itself to the character and story but the size and undertaking of the novel itself takes the reader on their own journey as the progress.

this novel was in our obligatory school programme and i may be the only student in the class who read it from the beginning till the end. i liked it but the war scenes were quite boring for my taste. and i didn't have a favorite character at all. i read some reviews here and see that many people don't understand some things. in fact, i think you must be from russia or, at least, from former ussr (like me) to understand these things. you must study history of russia, russian literature, etc start ...more
