I can think of no book more beautifully and achingly observed than The Catcher in the Rye. Every character is vibrant and real, from their conversational and behavioral tics to the implied longings of their hidden hearts. There is no line out of place, no sentence that fails to enrich the portraits of Holden and every other character in the story. Although this book is incredibly well written, although a little too American (I didn't have a clue what the Holden was talking about at times), I just didn't really like it. I couldn't relate the character at all. He irritated me to the point I wanted to magically go into the book and tell him what a waste of space I thought he was. I didn't think he was funny and yes, I get that he is exactly the thing he hates about everyone else. I'm glad I've read it but I couldn't bare to pick this book up
