To say I didn't enjoy this book at all is an understatement. The reason it got two stars instead of one was because I thought the war bits were quite well written, I could not say the same thing for the rest of the book however. I felt it was trying to be too clever - it was actually quite predictable and boring. There were bits that I felt were added unnecessarily. I wasn't moved or convinced. It lacked emotion and the ability to conjure vivid pictures. About a quarter of the book was dedicated to describing the romance between the lead character and his fling, which was disappointing for a book of this length, and after reading the self-proclaimed effort that went into researching world war one, I expected a vivid conjuring of the war. ...more

5 stars only for chapters about the wwi. Pre-war chapters are good. Post-war.., well, ok.
