This depressing, bleak, tragic novel had me under a spell. I did not want to put it down. This is the first Hardy book I've read, and I fell in love with his writing. I don't think there is a single sentence that in this book that didn't belong. You know, you read books, and find yourself skimming the boring stuff to get to the meat and potatoes.
