This work impresses more when considered as a set of linked short stories than as a novel. Skimming through other reviews I think many readers were disappointed as they were expecting a literary novel about an indie rock band. Don't be fooled by the cover - the book is only marginally about rock. Having grown up in the early eighties, and now experiencing my own visit from the "goon squad", I found the characters recognizable but not likable and their situations painful.
