Shelves: non-fiction, audio-book

I really enjoyed this book. While some of the workplace scenarios, settings, and discussions are not as relevant for work outside the corporate world, she addresses that and makes it SO relevant.

I had heard a lot of things about this book and many of them were so inaccurate I felt like I really couldn't be reading the same book as some of those people. After watching countless interviews with Sheryl Sandberg about Lean In, I decided I would have to read it. I was unsure what to expect when I started. I knew there had been some negative reactions to the message with some critics feeling like Sandberg was blaming women.

I found that the book resonated with me. I have confidence issues that have stopped me from moving forward at times. I also have been hesitate to sit at the table (even when invited). I knew there had been some negative reactions to the message with some critics feeling like Sandberg was blaming women.

I found that the book resonated with me. I have confidence issues that have stopped me from moving forward at times. I also have been hesitate to sit at the table (even when invited). Additionally, I also have been hesitant to embrace the word feminist.

We have made some progress over the years, but not as much as we would like. I found a lot of the research concerning gender and the work place interesting and sad. I work in an industry where my co-workers are primarily female currently (in a department of nursing). It has been a growing experience for me. I have learned a lot from people I consider mentors (without ever using the label) and I have also learned a lot about ways not to behave.

I am glad that Sandberg talked about setting her own hours. I have found that in this day and age of smart phones and laptops that we are expected to work whenever someone sends us an e-mail. Over the past couple of years, I have done a better job setting this boundaries but also find myself feeling guilty about it. Part of this is because I am single without children. I realize now we all get asked uncomfortable/rude questions. I was asked if I hated children because I have not had kids. This came from a stay at home Mom. We really need to stop pulling each other down and agree to respect the choices of other women.

I do have faith that the generations coming of age now are beginning to see the world differently. I have 2 nieces and both have expressed that they don't want to have kids (though this may change). They see me as a person to aspire to be like (which has mystified me at times). I didn't know at their age that this is what my life would be like. After reading the book, I am glad that they don't have any hesitation to consider all options. I just hope they choose what makes them happy.

Inspiring book I would recommend to all women. I also think that men should read it for a lot of the research presented in the book. I think many of the facts will be surprising. I also am going to lean in more. ...more
