I had read this book years ago, probably over a decade now, and thought very little of it. I thought that Meacham was painting Jackson in an undue favorable light. Jackson is a monster, sure, but that he had not presented that in a way that I felt was warranted. Reading this with more mature, educated, and fresher eyes I feel very different. Meacham presents Jackson as a total monster, but he is OUR monster. He is not a good guy, and often times in his life he was pointing his rage at innocent p

What a study in contrast this character was...
A fascinating tale of a very interesting man, for better and for worse. Very likable in a lot of ways and unbelievably crass in others. Makes an interesting parallel to today's times with regards to petty partisan politics and the general climate in D.C. But also makes you realize how different the country was back then. History and biography writing is a sort of art and there are several approaches: the chronologically exhaustive approach, probably most recently and popularly enshrined by Edmund Morris's thre

Jackson was a far more politically savvy and intelligent president than many have recognized, according to Meacham. When considering the other giants of his day that he was matched up against (JQA, Calhoun, Van Buren, Clay, and Webster), Jackson really held his own.
Made his mark on the presidency and on the connection of the president to the American people. Screwed over the Indians and blacks. ...more
