I'm sorry. I like Jared Diamond. Guns, Germs and Steel was great because it had a unifying interesting Big Idea and piled up facts to support it. This is a peripatetic, verbose collection of unrelated observations. There are fascinating ingredients for conversations, but not a fully baked book. No real conclusions can be drawn because the author (appropriately) hedges everything with disclaimers about how "traditional" practices may be irrelevant today. ...more
