WOW! Fabulous...maddening...funny...sad...inspiring. Rachel has explained in everyday words what has happened with the military. There are so many passages I read that made me think, "Really?" or "No way! That crossed my mind but they (gov't) really didn't do that did they?"

Liked this a lot. It was very readable for an academic book - chapters a reasonable length and thematically tied together are a joy. I always enjoy learning about history I didn't know much about, which for me includes the 2nd half of the 20th century. I'm a little young to have followed Iran-Contra at the time, and while I previously had a vague grasp of what that was, now I have a much clearer understanding. A thought provoking romp through constitutional history as it pertains to the US going to war. (how often do you get to write that sentence?) The book is written with a bias but it's fairly obvious when you are hearing fact versus opinion and the book at least appears to be quite well researched. I found it surprising to realize that what Maddow is advocating is a return to constitutional values- a crusade not often attributed to the American left.
