I've heard poor reviews for this book, so I was pleasantly surprised when I started reading it and enjoyed it right off the bat. However, all the bad reviews got to me and with about a third of it left, I put it down. I think I was afraid it would have a stupid ending and ruin it for me.

Fortunately, I picked it back up again this weekend and finished it. I don't get why this book is rated so poorly. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved the various story lines. I felt the past was written in a sort

I had already read Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close on the recommendation of another teacher. I really enjoyed it, so it just made sense to get a copy of this novel and try it out.

And I wasn't disappointed. The characters were rich and humorous. I especially liked Alex the translator. His journey is really touching. I didn't mind the POV jumps as much. It all was pretty clearly marked. That's reassuring for this reader.

For the first couple of chapters, I thought this book might be too modern for me. The shifting voice and timeline seemed like a gimic. Once I got into it though, I wound up loving the story. At its heart, it's a novel about love and memories, not a complicated story, told in a very moving way. ...more

I really can't get into Jonathan Safran Foer. He has some interesting concepts in his books, but they never seem to go anywhere. I always feel like he just picks concepts that will be moving and then throws them all together into a book and doesn't bother to connect them fully develop the plot. ...more

less fluid and beautiful than Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, but still amazing. heartbreaks and shit.
