What Members Thought

The writing was beautiful and evocative. I never knew where this book was going. I'm still confused by some parts, but I willingly went on one heck of an emotional ride with this one. Now, like with any roller coaster ride, let's do it again.

In an obvious homage to Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, Dr. Marina Singh is asked to travel to the most remote jungles of the Amazon by the pharaceutical company for which she works for two reasons. The first is to recover the remains of her research partner, Dr. Anders Eckman, who died there and also to get a status report on the research being conducted by Dr. Annick Swenson. I think I enjoyed this one more than Bel Canto. This had a bit more action and plot. I think Dr. Swenson was a wonderful character. I loved Marina, the doctor sent to the Amazon to find out what is going on with Dr. Annick Swensen and her research project on fertility. The impetus for this journey is the death of Marina's friend and colleague Anders. He was sent to the Amazon on a similar mission before Marina. Great story, though a bit slow moving early on. There is even a visit to the opera which reminded me of Bel Canto.
