"A History of the World in 100 Objects" is probably the best book I read this year. It's by Neil MacGregor, the director of the British Museum. He uses items from the museum's collection--the Rosetta Stone, Zhou Dynasty bronzes, Victorian tea sets, and much else--to trace out the development of civilization across all the cultures of the globe, bringing in science, commerce, agriculture, art, religion, politics.
