This book talks about neuroscience while wrapping around it fictional biographies of a married couple, Harold and Erica. Consciousness takes credit for the unconscious, giving us a faulty outlook that we make deliberated decisions where they were made before even attempting to consider. David Brooks has done a great job of explaining how the world does not exist to humans in the linear and logical fashion we seem to want, but is instead messy and far more uncontrolled than we will ever admit. His structural use of characters keeps the book lighter than a more scientific dissertation would have been.
