What Members Thought

How could you not love this book? A.J. Jacobs decided to spend a year of his life (I'm sure that his family was thrilled) living according to the tenets of the Bible. Dividing the year between the Old Testament and the New Testament, Jacobs models his behavior, his diet, and his wardrobe on dictates from the Bible. A very funny book and an interesting look at different Biblical mandates and how they apply in modern life. A.J. Jacobs is a marketing genius.

I read The Know-It-All a few years ago and thought it was cutish, but tiresome at times. It seemed to drag on if I read it for too long, or too often, so I decided that for The Year of Living Biblically, I would go for the audio book version, hoping to keep the text more lively than it droning on in my head.
Yes, the audio version won. The book is definitely humorous at times, but Jonathan Todd Ross's reading kept it lively in between the humorous bits. He has a lovely voice, and sounded excited, ...more

If I saw Jacobs on the street I'd give him a big pat on the back for this memoir. I picked it up leary and ready to be exasperated by a patronizing tone or a fakey quasi-uplifting conversion story. I got neither. Admittingly, there were moments when I didn't buy what he said, but for a surprisingly large part of his book, Jacobs was able to step back and report his experience and give a fair shake to the different sects he stumbled into.

I picked up this book during a long layover and it kept me entertained for hours of boring airport time. It was very often hilarious, but also "deep" at times.
The author, A.J. Jacobs, attempts to live according to the proscriptions of the Bible. Which, as you might suspect, turns out to be exceedingly difficult due to the conflicting messages contained within the good book, as well as the realities of modern life (e.g. honoring the Sabbath is hard when email makes it so easy to work every day of ...more

I'm reading the Bible -- as of today, I'm on my 13th book -- so this dovetailed nicely with my long-term project. I absolutely loved this book. It's entertaining, educational and thought-provoking. Jacobs' sense of humor is like mine. I live in Knoxville, so I was thrilled when he wrote about flying into the Knoxville airport, speaking to a religious studies professor at the University of Tennessee (my alma mater and one of my minors in college, along with political science) and driving to Del R

I know that it's humor, and I know that this sounds ridiculous, but this actually kind of...I don't know--changed the way I look at religion? I am so ashamed of myself for saying that.. I just really really enjoyed this book!!
