What Members Thought

I can't say there were any characters that I was rooting for. It kept reminding me of The Great Gatsby. Sometimes the dialogue was difficult to follow - some anachronistic.

A line from the book sums up the book:
From Ch. XVII:
" 'I'm rather drunk,' Mike said. 'I'll stayrather drunk. This is all awfully amusing, but it's not too pleasant.' "
The good: The dialog. Approximately half the novel is told as dialog. The impression is that you are sitting at the next table in the cafe overhearing the dialog.
The bad: the characters are involved solely in drinking, fistfights, fishing (!) and watching bullfights. Yawn.

I read this in high school as well, but did not get the same things out of the book. I enjoyed it much more this time, I spent the entire book wishing I was back in Spain and France - but probably a little overly-nostalgic about the times when a name could get you credit at any hotel. It was very fun to read after seeing Midnight in Paris. I also felt strangely drawn to the bottle...

I've been rereading some classics that I "read" in high school and college. I really enjoyed this book SO much more this time. Maybe it's because I read it and didn't skim it in order to not embarrass myself in class.

A good book ... I don't quite get what all of the hubbub over this book is about, but maybe if I'd read it in its own era I'd get it better... Maybe the characters would be more noteworthy and the style would be more remarkable.
Still, a good read. ...more
