Listened to this as an audio-book on the train to Fresno. I accidentally had my iPod on shuffle for about 15-20 minutes at the beginning, which was very confusing. It's read by the author, who I think has a nice voice. I enjoyed the book quite a bit, it's an interesting case study on opportunity, privilege, and choice. There was a bit where the two Wes Moore's were discussing the difference between second chances and last chances, and how it can be very hard to tell the two apart that I though w ...more

"There but for the grace of God." Wes (neither of them) never says these words in the book, but that's the question. Why me? Why him?

The author does a good job of describing the life and the humanity of each man, without excusing "bad" choices. For my part, I think some of those choices were rational or inevitable, given their circumstances. If we offer a section of our population no good options, should we be surprised when they take bad ones?

This book really makes you think. The book outlines the lives of two young men with the same name from similar backgrounds. It tells the story of both young men coming of age and the challenges each faces. One overcomes the drugs and violence on the streets, the other doesn't. Why? Read the book and draw your own conclusions. ...more
