What a great way to end one year and start another.
A wondrous tale of slavery and the underground railroad with a hint of mysticism. I have to admit that I didn't catch, at first, that the main character, Hiram, was referred to as Hi. At first, I thought "these people have a different way of talking." (Go ahead and laugh.)
I would have preferred to have spent more time with this, but I was reading it through the holidays. It was so worth the time. ...more

Water Dancer
Heartbreakingly beautiful. The writing is smooth and clean. The story, of course, compelling. Slavery is our national embarrassment and the collective stories sound the same. But, like stories of the Holocaust, every one is unique, personal, tragic, devastating. Scars left on the generations right on down. If only we could go back and undo the damage humans have done. You won’t put this down.
