I don't think I've ever read a book like this before. Most memoirs of suffering or adversity seem very carefully filtered even if they are poignant, and at the conclusion it is always made obvious that the author has overcome whatever it was. Not so with Hunger. Although you do get to see Roxane move quite a distance along the path that she wants for herself, it's *not* sugar-coated, and the writing is very brutal, and there isn't a tidy ending.

Simply brilliant. The most powerful memoir I've read. The intimacy and welcome Gay gives her readers here is compelling and life changing. I confronted many biases I have/had regarding women and their bodies. My thoughts meander a lot more now than before when faced with these biases. I can't pretend they are gone, but there is more complexity in my reactions. This is a relentlessly cutting, depressing, and agonizing story, but somehow incredibly beautiful. I'm in complete awe at Roxane's bravery in revealing some of her most profound secrets and fears. If I could have an ounce of that bravery, I would be a very lucky person.
