This is an entertaining way to explore some very heavy topics: Apartheid, global poverty, criminality, the absurdity of racism, etc. Trevor Noah narrates his own book and does a great job with all the voices, languages and accents, adding a layer of authenticity and immediacy to the narrative. This is the project Noah was born for: he is an excellent raconteur of personal tales, he has a heart of gold despite being a criminal, and he has a sophisticated multi-faceted view of South African societ ...more

I liked Trevor Noah prior to reading this book. He progressed from "not Jon Stewart" to making The Daily Show his own, where I respected him for his facility with American cultural references despite being a South African native. I have a profound respect for him and what he's been through after reading it. Well written. Expertly narrated by the author.Amazing that he turned out to be a comedian AND as well adjusted as he is. Truly a living monument to his mother. ...more

Fascinating. The Daily Show host writes about his upbringing in South Africa. Funny at times, painful at others, this young man has lived a remarkable life.

Loved this. It was more than just a memoir of his childhood in South Africa. I appreciated his observations and reflections on apartheid and poverty. I only wish I could have listened to him read it, but I could hear it in his voice anyway. I highly recommend.

Trevor plainly lays out the context of a complicated quilt and plurality of South Africa against the backdrop and shadow of apartheid. He explains the life of hustle and survival with clarity and universality that mirrors the plight of so many oppressed peoples acros

Listened to audiobook as recommended by Meg. Definitely the way to do it. Learned a ton and gained even more respect for Noah. His mom is incredible.

Deducted one star because it was a bit lengthy, could've done without a few of the essays.
