David McCullough hits exactly the right notes in his examination of the lives of Wilbur and Orville Wright. Beginning with their back story growing up in Dayton, Ohio, McCullough presents a compelling view of the lives of the brothers and their pioneering efforts in the field of aviation as well as effectively placing them into the framework of their family, their Midwest roots, and the events surrounding them throughout their careers. An impressive and admiring look at two impressive and admirable men, Wilbur and Orville Wright. I knew about the December 17, 1903, flight at Kitty Hawk but I'd had no idea about the events of the 7 years following, especially the amazing year Wilbur spent in Europe, mostly France. I am reminded of course of what a different America it was 125 years ago, though still not without some corruption and bad eggs; however, the Wright brothers are a shining example of diligence and fearlessness and I a ...more

I've long loved David McCullough's choice of historical figures to write about, this one has to be at the top of the pile of his books. My opinion IS prejudiced by state pride. That is even intensified by living within an easy drive of the sites in Ohio where the planning and building of the Wright Flyer took place.

Great book. McCullough is a historian for the people. I was reluctant to read this because I wasn't that interested in the topic, but I like McCullough, so I gave it a shot. The Wright Brothers were awesome. Dedicated and hard working. They really changed life on planet earth. ...more
