Michael Lewis is the real deal. He delves into complex, important matters. He gets the facts straight. He speaks truth to power. And he figures out how to make it a good story by finding the unlikely underdog who bucks the system. In this case, there is Brad, who determines that there's something fishy going on with every single transaction on the stock market. When Michael Lewis comes out with a book on the financial markets--read it! You'll think it's a thriller and the odds are you'll understand things you never imagined. Truly, he has a unique gift. No doubt he'll get you ready to lynch some Wall Street guys--but hold off. Lewis has a point of view He tells his stories by finding a small group of Davids among the Goliaths. You'll be impressed and wish that everyone could be like them. That would be nice but you need to look at some outside sources ...more

This book is really the story of why and how IEX was created. Humans made bad decisions. So, to protect people from other people, we moved the operation of the stock market to being run by computers. The natural consequence was for people to game the system with computer code. Rather than stay vigilant against new exploitations, we just redefined fair. The team behind IEX created it to eliminate these problems and establish a fair place for trading to occur.

Have you ever wondered why the stock market goes up or why the stock market goes down? Then when a news person asks an expert trader or market maker at the NYSE or NASDAQ and they have no idea. They then blame the weather or butterflies or the color of the American Presidents suit. This book explains why when the stock market goes up it keeps going up for no reason and why when the stock market goes down it goes down a lot. The author had an extended interview (over one hour long!) on CSPAN Book-TV about this book. (It's available online.) He was very clear and informative in the interview. Michael Lewis is very clear and informative in his explanations. The only drawback to this book is that it is so much about what is happening on Wall Street during the first quarter of 2014, and so little about anything else.
