Very fine reading by Donald Sutherland on the audio version, giving great nobility and simplicity at the same time to the old man.
A classic. Just for the plot, it can't compete with a spy thriller. But that's not the point; it's not a book about fishing! It's a metaphor for trying to accomplish anything in an absurd world. At that level, it's inspiring. And the extraordinary simplicity of the writing while dealing with such difficult concepts is a mark of mastery. ...more

Shelves: fiction

This was my first contact with Hemingway and hence, my first contact with his famous "deceptively simple style" and I must say, I'm not overly impressed... Sure, he writes in a direct and simple manner while managing to not seem simple minded and I guess that's an accomplishment, but there's just something about that straightforwardness that completely fails to leave and signification impression upon me. It's intimidating writing a review for a book for which there are books written as reviews. Simply, I loved escaping to the sea with my old man. What a beautiful tale that took me there in the little boat, watching the flying fish, wondering why the hell the old man didn't cut the rope and move on.
