Dear Ms. Kane,

I finished reading City of Ghosts and I'm utterly speechless. This is one of my favorite books this year. I'll be honest with you and say that after I read book one I wasn't totally sold on the idea of a heroine with a drug problem, among her other issues.

After following Chess stumble across her life through the past three books all I can say is it takes a truly talented author to bring out so much emotion and the depth of connection that y

I will write a review later. I just wanted to say that this book is one of my all time favorite books I've ever read! Definitely my favorite in the series too. I love when Chess is OD'ed on Dream (even though I probably shouldn't...) and all the funny things she says and thinks. And Terrible...he's my new boyfriend so ladies watch out... :P ...more

This review is also posted, along with other Downside Ghosts reviews, at Vampire Book Club.

After we finished Unholy Magic, the second Downside Ghosts book, we said how it was even better than the series opener Unholy Ghosts (review). Stacia Kane has again taken her dark urban fantasy series to new depths with City of Ghosts.

Chess still has a crime to solve, this time working with the police wing of The Church of Truth, a team called The Black Squad. But City of Ghosts is more about our flawed he

"She knew what she saw, and that was all that mattered. Knew what was behind those hard dark eyes, and wanted it more than anything."

This is one of the few series that I will drop everything for. I miss the Downside when I'm not there.

Terrible and Chess frustrated me but I'm glad things worked out the way they did in the end.

City of Ghosts is Stacia Kane’s third ‘Downside Series’ installment. When I read her first book in this series, Unholy Ghosts, I didn’t think a sequel could top it. Unholy Magic did just that with an excruciating roller coaster ride with Church Debunker Chess Putnam and Downside Enforcer Terrible ending a string of murders in ‘Downside’ while turning back a threat to Chess’s employer, The Church of Truth. City of Ghosts picks up right where Chess left off, alienated from Terrible because of dall ...more

I haven't been this thoroughly engrossed in a paranormal world since I discovered Sookieverse. Unholy Ghosts, Unholy Magic and City of Ghosts are the first three books in the Downside Ghosts series.

Stacia Kane has created a completely fascinating take on Urban Fantasy and she writes a brilliant mystery. Book after book after book! What impresses me the most, this author is not afraid to strip her protagonist down to the bare bones--Chess is vulnerable, lost and real, but she's a survivor. Kane b

This one has to be my favorite! Although it was tough to read at times...because Terrible was treating Chess like shit..she fecking deserved it. She really made some fuckedup choices which resulted in her paying dearly for them. (view spoiler) Somewhat...theres more healing to be done so-to-speak. The sex scenes between Chess and Terrible where hot as hell!!!

Now....without further adieu....
I would like to share my favorite moment of this book:

To say I love this series is an understatement. I can't say enough. I thought after I read book 1 that it was fantastic. Then I read book 2, and it was even better. Now I finished Book 3 and can say for certain that CoG blows them all out of the water.

The tension between Chess and Terrible, is, well, terrible. The words they say to each other are so vitriolic. I felt so very bad for Chess, and so very bad for Terrible. There were parts that I didn't want to read because it was so painful to rea

Chess wins as the most messed-up heroine I have enjoyed reading. Usually, when a character screws up this badly, I can't read it, but Kane does a great job of making me care about her. Although I know that there are more books to come in this series, I think the first three really work together as a trilogy.

In book 1, Chess starts out both starting to allow herself to care for someone other than herself, and at the same time, continuing her downward spiral of drugs and lies.

In book 2, Chess's be

This series is one of the most intense Urban Fantasys that I've ever read. The characters are so extremely engaging where I seriously felt that they could be real. You can't help but to love these characters that Stacia Kane has created regardless of how effed up their inner struggles are. Plus, the action and story is down, dirty, and gritty. There are no rainbows & lollipops in Downside, dig? I just don't know how I'll survive another year before I can read more Chess & Terrible. ...more

5/5 stars! I am so happy to have found this author! I love her writing sytle. This third installment of the Downside Ghosts found Chess struggling to work with a partner, shift through her feelings for Terrible and deal with the fact that she actually may have friends she can count on. There was not a lot of additional character development, we didn't learn a lot of new stuff about the main characters, but the action, the development of Chess' ability to forgive herself enough to do the right th ...more
