This book should be renamed Looking for Alaska with An Overabundance of Metaphors and Walt Whitman. I feel so sad for disliking what should have been a good book, but....it's just another John Green novel. I saw so many parallels to Looking For Alaska (beautiful wild girl who is inherently sad, boy in love with girl, quest for understanding blah blah) that it took away from my enjoyment of the novel.

I liked this considerably less than Looking for Alaska and Fault in our Stars. I still felt compelled to read but felt manipulated and occasionally bored. The characters, particularly our protagonists, were not particularly well developed, and after reading the other two JG books it seemed derivative (and this coming from someone who's a sucker for a coming of age story).

There's something about this book... it was compelling to read, it kept me guessing the whole way through as the main character was guessing as well.
But the way it ended didn't seem to match up to the lead up. So it gets 3 stars, not 4 or 5. ...more
