June and Day are on the run and headed to Vegas to try to find Tess. They decide to join the Patriots, they really don't have any other choice. The Patriots have lots of money and power and they need both to heal Day's leg (gunshot wound from the escape in book 1) and find Eden. They make new friends and enemies among the Patriots as they are set on a mission to assassinate the new Elector Primo, Anden. They make new friends and enemies among the Patriots as they are set on a mission to assassinate the new Elector Primo, Anden. June is sent to be arrested and brought in for her crimes, all for the chance to exploit Anden's interest in her. She is to get close to him and gain his trust, only to lead him to his death. Day is tasked with stirring up the people by reemerging into the public eye, showing them he is still alive and enciting rebellion against the Republic. He is then to be the trigger man in Anden's assassination. As June gets closer to Anden, she starts to doubt the Patriot's plan and the reasons behind it. Anden says he wants to bring changes to the Republic, undue his father's damage and bring peace to the people. June tries to send a signal to Day to call off the assassination and run for it when he gets a chance. Day finds himself torn between his support of the Patriot's ideas for the future and his belief in June. In the end he chooses to trust June, foiling the assassination attempt and escaping into the Colonies. Once there they discover the truth behind the assassination plan--the Colonies didn't hire the Patriot's to do it, Congress did. The Patriot's leader was in cahoots with the Republic's Senators to take down Anden and stop the changes he wants to make. With the help of Kaede, June and Day cross back into the Republic and throw their support behind Anden. Since Day is the Republic's most infamous and popular citizen, the people rally behind him in his support for Anden. In the end Day is reunited with a healthy, albeit blind, Eden and given a nice apartment and a full pardon. June is offered a position to train as Anden's Princeps (right hand basically). She doesn't want to take it because it will mean a lot of time away from Day over the coming years. Day tells her to take the job and basically breaks up with her. He doesn't tell her the Republic doctors discovered he is dying. The experiments that should have killed him as a child are finally catching up with him. The headaches are finally explained by the mess in his brain. The book ends with a kiss between the two. My questions: After everything June and Day have been through is it really over? Will Day actually be killed off or will they come up with a cure? What will Day's role be in the new Republic? What will become of the Patriots? the Colonies? Can't wait for book 3. ...more

Had a bit of trouble getting back into this series, but it fell back into place after a few chapters. Fast paced and good action, certainly. The big twist was not entirely surprising from a reader's point of view, though pretty devastating from the characters' POVs. One note: In this book, Day's chapter's are printed in blue and June's in black (in "Legend," Day was gold and June was black). Neat idea & matches the cover art, but after reading Day's blue chapters, June's appear brown. Not a big ...more

3.5/3.75 stars. I liked this better than the Legend and am slightly disappointed with the ending. I think there will be a pretty big twist in the next book. Starting today.

Surprisingly, I enjoyed this second book even more than the first one. The plot keeps getting more intricate and interesting. The characters are growing and changing. I was engrossed the whole time. Can't wait to see how this trilogy ends. ...more
