I've been avoiding writing the review for this. Not because I didn't like it, and not because I liked it so much, but because I have so many mixed feelings about it. There were parts I loved (view spoiler) and parts that frustrated me (view spoiler) ...more

second reread: I think this has my favorite and least favorite bits so far in the series. On one hand, I love Bitterblue. Everything is so complicated and there is so much trauma and so much she has to deal with and she's so young. On the other hand, I feel like this book is super long with SO MANY characters and so many things going on. (view spoiler) ...more

I really love this series even though it doesn't really meet my clean requirements. The first book is my favorite, but this was still a great read. Kristin Cashore can do no wrong. My only regret is that now I have to wait for her next book.

Re-read January 2023. I have to give this 4.5 this time. It’s the second time that I’ve felt like I’ve had to slog through parts. The book needs to be about 100 pages shorter, maybe. Still, Cashore is an amazing author, and I love her writing, especially her afterword here about the process of writing the book. I aspire to write like her!!!

Wonderful how everything came together. Again, the imagery is vivid, exciting, and colorful.
