I guess I never reviewed this the first few times that I read it. This time I listened to it as an audiobook, which is a relatively rare experience for me. I think that the narrator did an excellent job.
I do really enjoy this story. I like the concept of "Monsters" and their powers. My only criticism is that I feel the book loses some momentum near the end. (Or maybe I was just in a hurry to finish the audiobook before it expired?) ...more

second reread: I feel like if I read this now for the first time it would probably be 4 stars, not 3, but I hardly ever change my original rating. This hit me so much harder than it has in the past. First of all, wow, it must be exhausting to be Fire. Just everything, constantly, the exhaustion of being her. It's relentless. Second, I was hit harder by the emotional beats in this story more this time. I don't know if it was just my headspace, or being older, but I really liked it.

Not perfect, but very good -- and better than Graceling. The character of Fire was infinitely more likeable, which is mildly ironic given that Fire is not even human. Cashore's writing matures here, she writes more thoughtfully, creates better characters and underscores their actions with believable thoughts and feelings. I enjoyed this - a dark sort of twist on the fantasy genre. It lacks fluffiness, and it's not centered around a romance but is more about the heroine's growth as a person.
