I would have given this 4.5 stars -- thought it was more accurate to round up than down. This is an amazingly competent debut, and for me, any small undervelopment in character or plot (and I thought these were VERY small) were more than eclipsed by its overall success. Great concept, good pace, and (I felt) good world-building and character development. I look forward to the next installment. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Kristin Atherton, which was excellent.

This is a really interesting alternate history book set in 1920s London, where dragons live alongside humans. Except dragons are treated badly as fourth-class citizens and subject to cruelties. Vivien, a polyglot and a second-class citizen, finds herself on the wrong side of history, forced to work for the Prime Minister to save her family as a code breaker, which will end the war and enslave dragons.
