I might give book 2 a try since I already checked it out from the library. Just ok nothing all exciting. Writing was good. Vivid scenes but I didn't care about any characters.

This is exactly the kind of fairy tale I search for – I have no idea why I hadn’t read it before now but at least this way I don’t have to wait for the other books to release. I immediately purchased them after finishing The Bear and the Nightingale. The world-building, the never a good choice situations people found themselves in, and the depth of emotional conflict (especially for Vasya) was so well done in this book. Vasya and her family reminded me a lot of the Stark’s before they leave Wint ...more

This book just wasn’t for me. I figured it wouldn’t be. People that don’t like it are people, like me, who get bored when a plot focuses mostly on the characters and the plot itself runs super slow. That’s a lot of the negative reviews I read but I gave it a shot anyways and it was just like I feared. The book was well written but the plot moved too slow to maintain my interested. I cared little for the characters and things didn’t start to get interesting for me until the end.
