The complexity of the world and beautiful, rich writing give this 5 star appeal, but the plot lost major momentum in the last third of the book and I nearly didn't finish it. Glad I did, and am looking forward to the next book. ...more

It would be hard for a book to be written with more of my interests included. Alchemy, History, Philosophy, Vampires, Witches, Oxford, and even Yoga. To say I feel that Deborah Harkness must be a kindred spirit over much more than our shared names is an understatement.

I was originally avoiding this book because it was another witches and vampire book. But since I saw it on the library's ebook lender decided to give it a try. I am glad I did. It's a smart, adult fantasy, a great break from all the loose, vague young adult novels out there. Can't wait for the next book to see where the story goes.

I picked this up expecting a "Twilight" knock-off, but this tale of forbidden love between a witch and a vampire is intelligent, exciting, thought-provoking and very well-written. I'm looking forward to the second installment out this summer. ...more

This book was a lot longer then it needed to be. It felt redundant in some areas. Overall though, I liked the story. It did make me wonder what happened next.
