In light of the abusive/racist/disrespectful behaviours by (well-known) authors that have been made known, and are discussed in detail in Twitter, I am determined to not monetarily support all individuals who have exhibited said attitudes, and this book is written by one of them.

However, this came through a book box subscription and (for) now I own the hardcover. So, I will probably read it.

Honestly? This book was brilliant and hit all the notes, the good ones and OH how I care about these characters now. But somehow I feel a little letdown by the closing chapters? Maybe because I guessed the big twist before it happened? Maybe I read it too fast? Either way I need Dev1at3 now. Like right now.

I hate Jay Kristoff in the best way possible. His books give me book hangovers. They make me scream. They make me want to throw the book to the other side of the room in frustration. They are amazing.
Lifelike was no different.
In this sci-fi post apocalyptic world we follow Eve as she tries to rescue her grandfather and escape the people killing her. She is also trying to work out suppressed memories from her past.
The first chapter grabbed me, and we are immediately thrown into a super fast pa I hate Jay Kristoff in the best way possible. His books give me book hangovers. They make me scream. They make me want to throw the book to the other side of the room in frustration. They are amazing.

The first chapter grabbed me, and we are immediately thrown into a super fast paced, ride or die story. The first half of the book was good. It was exciting, adventurous, kept me interested. There was a lot of information that we needed to process and a lot of moving parts, but it was good. And then somewhere around the halfway point things start making a lot more sense and the book goes from good to great. The last quarter of the book blows things out of the water. I was glued to the page, literally yelling at the book for the last few chapters. Everything falls into place. We get reveal after reveal in ways that are so perfect, for things that there have been kinda alluded too, but not enough that it isn't shocking. And the books ends so well, with enough set up that I'm dying for book two, but not so cliffhanger-ey that I wasn't satisfied.
And the writing. This is where Jay Kristoff shines, even more than in plot, even though it's almost impossible. The longer the book goes on the better the writing gets. There are call backs to scenes between characters, little phrases that we hear several times and each time the meaning changes and gets better. You can feel the pain of the characters. You can see the battles. You can really imagine the world that he's painted.
Now on to a few very spoilery notes (view spoiler) All in all this book was amazing and I liked it so much more than I expected, especially the second half. I need more Jay Kristoff, ASAP.
