This book had been on my ereader for a super long time…like years. The cover has always intrigued me but i always seem to be in some kind of reading slump. I decided to pick this one up about a month ago, just a random idea. It took me almost the full month to read it. I decided to pick this one up about a month ago, just a random idea. It took me almost the full month to read it. It wasn’t wholly the book’s fought….i had final exams last week and so i pretty much read only my textbooks and study notes for about two weeks straight. The story itself does move a bit slow though as well, but i didn’t mind it really.

Characters. I didn’t dislike the characters…but i also didn’t find them super attractive and they certainly weren’t good role models. I found Lilac to be quite bitchy and annoying sometimes… especially in the beginning. I understand there were reasons for how she acted, but still… She did grow a lot through the book and started to seem a bit better. Tarver was ok. I liked his sense of humor at times and he was pretty helpful in a survival situation….so that’s good. Not sure if i’d claim “book boyfriend” though. There wasn’t a lot of depth to the other characters. The only other character i really remember is the Dad. From what i understand, we will be seeing more of him…or atleast of his company in the coming books, so i think this first book was a good introduction to him.

The Romance. I hope this doesn’t sound too ranty…but the romance was a little…awkward to me. I understand how they sorta liked each other in the beginning and that’s a good start…but being intrigued and physically attracted to someone doesn’t equated to love. There has to be other things too…namely time.

The World. The world was nice. I love to cruiseships and since everyone was saying “titanic in space”, i kept picturing Icarus as a cruiseship. I like the imagery of the planet also, plains and snowy mountains, my favorite. The imagery of the ship debris was kind of creepy, but it needed to be. My fave scene was near the end, the blue lightening spark things. I liked that whole concept really. I had now real issue with the world building, and definite look forward to learning more in the other books.

Overall. I have to say that i liked the story overall. Other than the little rant, the rest was enjoyable. I do plan on reading the whole series as well as other books from the authors. I would recommend this book for anyone who likes survival stories and space settings. For teens reading this book, It important to understand that the characters do make some bad choices, so please don’t imitate. Id recommend this for older teens who already understand right from wrong…probably not a good choice for younger or impressionable teens.

Rating. I was heavily considering 3.5, but there are some really beautiful lines in the book along with some clever and funny ones. I did like the story as well, so i rate it a 4 out of 5.
